The Virtuoso Luxe Report’s list of emerging destinations indicates where up-scale travellers seeking something off the beaten path will venture to in 2016. Cuba was the preferred choice most likely because of improved relations with the US. Next were Iceland,Croatia and Myanmar. New to the top five is Antarctica, which provides the allure of a remote destination for the luxury elite.

Traditional favourite Italy topped the family destination ranking, closely followed by Mexico, Hawaii, Orlando and England. Virtuoso’s advisors report that families are seeking active and authentic travel experiences, and as a result, they are also heading to less conventional travel destinations. Now days families are enjoying everything from surfing in Sri Lanka, language lessons in Costa Rica to ice fishing in Canada.

South Africa came out on top for adventure travellers who have named it the best worldwide destination for active travel, closely followed by Costa Rica. Virtuoso’s experts also report a sharp rise in travellers looking for unique once in a life time trips such as mountain climbing in Iceland, swimming with whale sharks in Mexico and guerilla trekking in Rawanda.
