Day 1

Arrival in the village of Zvecaj

The small and charming village of Zvecaj will be your first destination on this trip. You will arrive in Zagreb or Rijeka (at the airport, railway station or harbor) where you will be welcomed by our driver who will take you to the Zeleni Kut hotel (the Green Corner hotel) in Zvecaj. The Zeleni Kut is a lovely, family run hotel and well-known restaurant in the village, overlooking the Mreznica river in a picturesque location near a waterfall. The hotel was built above an old mill, which still produces electricity to this day. The restaurant serves traditional Croatian specialties, all home made with local ingredients that include freshly caught fish and organic vegetables. We recommend the homemade delicacies such as sausages, ham and cheese.

After settling in, we will meet on the hotel terrace for a welcome drink, dinner and a brief orientation, while enjoying the view over the river. It is a perfect opportunity to get to know your guides and your fellow travelers and to discuss the week ahead.

  • Accommodation: Family run hotel in Zvecaj
  • Van transfer (duration: 1 hour from Zagreb and 1h 30min from Rijeka)
  • Meals: Dinner

Day 2

Hiking in National Park Risnjak

The impressive Risnjak mountain range in Gorski Kotar is located about 15km inland from the Adriatic Sea and covers an area of over 60km². This mountain area is covered in pristine forests and is home to the source of the Kupa river. It is believed that Risnjak was named after a rare animal that lives there: the lynx (called ‘ris’ in Croatian).

The hiking trip will start in Crnu Lug, from where we will follow the Leska educational trail to Big Risnjak, the highest peak of the park. Just 100m below the peak lies the Schlosser mountain hut, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountain huts in the country. Here we will take a break and enjoy the amazing views over the mountaintops of Gorski Kotar and the Alps, and the views over the Adriatic Sea. After our break, we will descend and continue the educational trail.

If the group requires an easier hiking route, then a route through the Kupa river valley is recommended. The valley is one of the most beautiful places in the Gorski Kotar region. The Kupa river springs at the park’s lowest point and forms a pond with an amazing aquamarine color. It is one of the deepest and strongest sources in the country and, even though it has been extensively studied by scientists, it still has many mysterious elements. The valley of the Kupa river is often called the ‘valley of the butterflies’ as there are over 500 butterfly species living there, with many species that can’t be found anywhere else but in this valley.

At the end of the afternoon, after the hiking trip is over, you will return to the hotel for dinner.

  • Accommodation: Family run hotel in Zvecaj
  • Van transfer (duration: 1h – 1h 30min in one direction)
  • Walking: 3 to 5 hours
  • Terrain: Moderate (Big Risnjak) or easy (Kupa Valley) with well-marked trails
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner (picnic lunch on your own)

Day 3

Hiking in National Park Northern Velebit

On day three you will visit the Northern Velebit National Park, which is famous for its karst phenomena, which means that the karst-forming limestone creates a wide range of shapes such as holes, basins, channels, stalactites and stalagmites. Because of these phenomena, and the area’s beautiful nature, it was declared a national park. The many mountaineering trails are all very interesting, but the best one has to be the Premuzic trail, named after the man who built it over 80 years ago. The trail covers the most beautiful and most interesting areas of the park and offers stunning sea views and mountain views.

You will be staying in private accommodation in the picturesque village of Korana, in the lovely Korana river valley near National Park Plitvice. The guest houses in the village are small and traditional and the village offers nothing more than private houses in a romantic and idyllic setting. There are no restaurants or shops, making it seem as if the village comes straight out of a fairytale. Korana is the perfect base for exploring the Plitvice area.

  • Accommodation: Private guest house in Korana
  • Van transfer (duration: 2h 30min in one direction)
  • Walking: 4 to 5 hours
  • Terrain: easy to moderate, with well-marked trails
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner (picnic lunch on your own)

Day 4

Discovering National Park Plitvice

The 16 beautiful lakes of National Park Plitvice, with their extraordinary colors, are waiting for you. Follow the trail that takes you over wooden walkways, past amazing waterfalls and numerous caves. There are over 90 waterfalls in the park, an abundance of wildlife, vast forest areas and much more for you to discover. You’ll enjoy a lovely picnic lunch surrounded by unspoiled nature. You will return to the starting point by taking a panoramic boat ride and a shuttle bus ride.

After returning in Korana in the afternoon, you can take a swim in the crystal clear river that flows just past your guest house.

  • Accommodation: Private guest house in Korana
  • Van transfer (duration: 15 min)
  • Walking: 4 to 5 hours
  • Terrain: easy with well-marked paths
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner (picnic lunch on your own)

Day 5

Day of rest with optional trips (departure day for some group members)

For members of the group who chose a five-day trip, this will be the end of your adventure.  You can schedule your transfer from Korana to the airport in Rijeka or Zagreb based on your flight departure time.

For the rest of the group, day five will be a day of rest. You have an opportunity to recharge your batteries for the days ahead, or discuss the options for another trip with your guide, in case you prefer to stay active and explore more of Croatia. Several trips can be arranged, from beach trips to climbing, hiking, canyoning or sightseeing. If you decide to take a trip on this day, and the weather conditions are in your favor, please note that an additional fee of around 50 Euro p.p. (based on minimum 4 participants) will be charged and will need to be paid on site.

  • Accommodation: Private guest house in Korana
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner (lunch on your own)
  • Van transfer (for those going back to the airport. Duration: max 2 hours)

Day 6

Hiking adventure in National Park Paklenica

On day 6 we say goodbye to Korana as we head south to National Park Paklenica, Croatia’s rock climbing and trekking paradise. The park has a size of almost 100km² and offers two impressive canyons, the Mala Paklenica (small Paklenica) and Velika Paklenica (large Paklenica) that are carved into the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain, Croatia’s largest mountain range and part of the Dinaric Alps. The diversity in the park is extraordinary, from the unusual mountain shapes to the untouched nature and rich flora and fauna. Nomadic shepherds have always lived in the mountains and plenty of summertime mountain residences have been built in the area throughout history, some of them still remain today. Due to the rough landscape, hiking is the only way to really get to know this interesting place. There are plenty of interesting hiking trails to choose from, the most popular one is the trail that leads to Borisov Dom, a mountain hut that is frequently visited by mountaineers. The last part of the trail involves descending all the way down to the sea, from where we will drive to our next accommodation in the town of Skradin, near National Park Krka.

  • Accommodation: Three-star Skradinski Buk Hotel in Skradin
  • Van transfer (duration: 2 hours and 1 hour respectively)
  • Walking: 4 to 5 hours
  • Terrain: moderate with will-marked paths
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner (picnic lunch on your own)

Day 7

Walking through National Park Krka

On your last day you will head out to one of Croatia’s most popular national parks, Krka National Park. You will visit the 44m high Skradinski Buk waterfall and the many other rapids and waterfalls in this amazing park that dates back to the 10th century, and that is also home to the word’s second oldest hydroelectric power plant. Let the park boat take you across Visovac Lake to the famous Franciscan monastery and its museum that holds a valuable archeological collection. After exploring the park, you will return to Skradin for a farewell dinner with your fellow travelers, to celebrate the end of an amazing trip.

  • Accommodation: Three-star Skradinski Buk Hotel in Skradin
