The Euphrasius Basilica is one of the most beautifully preserved pieces of Byzantium art in the Mediterranean.

You will meet your fellow travelers and guides in the afternoon after settling in, when we take our bikes for a rest ride through the city. In the evening we meet for a welcome drink, dinner and for a short presentation of the itinerary for the days ahead.

Day 2

Cycling around Porec, the Lim Bay Nature Reserve and Rovinj

From Porec we will cycle through the countryside towards the Lim bay, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Istria. The Lim bay is the 10km long estuary of the Pazincica river and is a natural breeding ground for many types of fish and shellfish. The estuary is rich in sea life and vegetation and is a protected area and fishing reserve. What makes the Lim bay so unique is the fact that it has such a diverse flora and fauna for such a small area. In the bay you can find all types of wild animals, from deer to foxes and bears, and many types of birds, including hawks and owls.

After we explore this special bay we cycle further to the town of Rovinj, Istria’s most popular coastal town. The old town of Rovinj is located on a peninsula and offers charming old houses, cobblestone streets and cozy cafes and restaurants. You will have time to explore this lovely town and even go for a swim here, if you wish.

Day 4

Exploring the hilltop towns of Motovun, Oprtalj and Groznjan

Most of the tourists that come to Istria stay in its popular coastal towns, but the inland offers some beautiful treasures as well. The rolling hills of the inland are ideal places for hilltop towns, and you will find many of them amongst the vineyards, olive groves and forests.
Today we will leave Porec with our luggage in our van and drive into the countryside. We will cycle to the picturesque towns of Opertalj and Groznjan, where we will take some time to explore the towns on foot. We will then cycle the Parenzana, and old railroad that is now a popular cycling route. Our new accommodation will be close to the town of Motovun and we will have a chance to explore this amazing little town as well. The majority of the roads on this route are flat or downhill and there will be very little traffic.

On day 5, the trip continues to the towns of Draguc and Sovinjak. Draguc is an ancient hilltop village where many films have been recorded. For this reason, it is often called the Hollywood of Istria. From Draguc we continue to Sovinjak, which offers the same amount of charm, plus a lovely view over the valley of the Mirna river. It is one of the most peaceful villages that you will ever visit. Many who come here say that it is so peaceful that it makes you want to whisper.

Accommodation: Private guesthouse in Motovun
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner (picnic lunch on your own)
Cycling: easy to moderate level, 3 to 4 hours

Day 6

Exploring National Park Risnjak

While cycling through National Park Risnjak, you will enjoy landscapes filled with hills and mountains, forests and meadows, rivers and valleys. We will cycle over paved roads that have very little car traffic. The climate in the park differs from that at the coast, and during hot summers people like to come to the park for its cooler air. The park is over 60km² large and includes the Snjeznik and Risnjak mountain range.

It is home to the source of the Kupa river, which flows along the Slovenian/Croatian border. It springs in the lowest point of the park, where it creates a beautiful turquoise pond. It is an extremely deep river source that continues to baffle scientist who come here to research it. The Kupa river valley is also known as the Valley of the Butterflies and we are sure that you can guess why. Over 500 types of butterflies can be found in the valley and many of them only live here. We will cycle to the village of Razloge, above the Kupa river source, passing other small villages on the way. Once we reach Razloge we will descend to the river source for a picnic in this amazing location. We continue cycling along the river, passing into Slovenia and back into Croatia as we follow the river bank.
