Whilst Zagreb is Croatia’s most populated city, it’s still relatively small; similar in population to Marseille or Amsterdam.
Cheers! Craft Beers & Pubs in Zagreb
There are beautiful monuments to explore, many interesting independent shops and restaurants, the famous Croatian coffee shop culture, and a fantastic up-and-coming craft beer scene.
The rising number of home brewers, microbreweries and pubs in Croatia are testament to the nation’s love of a good craft beer. Did you know the country is regularly featured in the Top 20 list of beer-drinking countries in the world? When visiting Zagreb, there are plenty of places where you can stop off to enjoy a cheeky beer or two.
One of the oldest pubs in Zagreb. The quaint pub is located in Opatovina Street, which has earned a reputation for being Zagreb’s beer Mecca. The pub interior is small and cosy and boasts a Lord of the Rings theme. There’s a collection of medieval memorabilia decorating the walls and a small outdoor terrace area. If you’re not sure which beer to sample, the friendly staff members are proud of their knowledge and will be happy to make a recommendation.
The Craft Room
Also located in Opatovina Street, the new-ish establishment has a funky interior and a wide variety of beers to sample and enjoy. There are over 12 beers on tap, and almost 100 bottled beers on offer. This is the place to go if you want to taste some of the Croatian craft beers that you can’t find anywhere else. Presentations of new Croatian craft beers are regularly hosted in the Craft Room. If you’re feeling peckish, there is also great local food available.
We’d recommend combining a visit to Zagreb and these fantastic pubs on a Croatia twin-centre holiday with a trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Situated downtown, half way between the main square and the central train station is All In. The small, street-side bar boasts a good selection of Croatian craft beers that are bottled and on tap. The atmosphere is warm, and the staff is friendly. The bar rotates beers on a guest tap so you can get to know some new local brews, an ideal place to become a regular.
Located in a quiet back street, close to Zagreb’s central bus station, the Hop In has the best selection of craft local and international bottled and draft beers among all of the pubs in the area.
The Old Pharmacy Pub
The Old Pharmacy Pub is situated away from the main attractions of the city, in a busy area. Inside the pub, you will find traditional décor, with comfy leather sofas and dark wood everywhere. There is a decent range of beer, with four to five draft beers on offer. It’s a great daytime hangout; it has an impressive range of English newspapers. It’s open late and has regular live music acts.
Situated in Ilica Street, Medvedgrad first opened its doors in 2009. The company established the first Croatian microbrewery back in 1994, and have been producing their own beer ever since. The large pub has an outdoor terrace and offers hearty pub style food. Medvedgrad produces five types of all natural beer that are made without preservatives, using traditional brewing methods.
In addition to Zagreb, go further afield on a Croatia multi-centre holiday, perhaps adding Split, Hvar or Dubrovnik. For a truly relaxing holiday, combine a trip to Zagreb with a Croatia island-hopping cruise.
