Day 1

Arrival in the village of Zvecaj

The small and charming village of Zvecaj will be your first destination on this trip. You will arrive in Zagreb or Rijeka (at the airport, railway station or harbor) where you will be welcomed by our driver who will take you to the Zeleni Kut hotel (the Green Corner hotel) in Zvecaj. The Zeleni Kut is a lovely, family run hotel and well-known restaurant in the village, overlooking the Mreznica river in a picturesque location near a waterfall. The hotel was built above an old mill, which still produces electricity to this day. The restaurant serves traditional Croatian specialties, all home made with local ingredients that include freshly caught fish and organic vegetables. We recommend the homemade delicacies such as sausages, ham and cheese.

In the afternoon, after settling in, we will choose and test the bicycles and go for a short ride through the nearby villages and forest, and to check out the rivers in the area. Depending on when you will be joining us for this trip, you can pick some wild berries, such as blackberries, strawberries or cherries, or even try some roasted corn or chestnuts.

We will cross the river with our bikes using the self-operated ferry and make our way back to Zvecaj for some time to relax and for a drink.

In the evening we will meet on the hotel terrace for a welcome drink, dinner and a brief orientation, while enjoying the view over the river. It is a perfect opportunity to get to know your guides and your fellow travelers and to discuss the week ahead.

  • Accommodation: Family run hotel in Zvecaj
  • Van transfer (duration: 1 hour from Zagreb and 1h 30min from Rijeka)
  • Meals: Dinner

Day 2

Cycling through National Park Risnjak and the valley of Kupa River

On our first cycling day we will explore the beautiful National Park Risnjak. The park is over 60km² large and is a wonderful place to discover by bike. The Kupa river forms a natural border between two neighboring countries, Croatia and Slovenia. The Kupa river valley is one of the most beautiful places in the region and is often called the ‘valley of the butterflies’ as there are over 500 butterfly species living there, with many species that can’t be found anywhere else but in this valley.

We start cycling at the entrance of the park and make our way to Razloge, passing lovely villages and pristine forests on the way. We will take the bridge over the Cabranka Rover near Zamost to enter Slovenia. After showing our passports, we will head on to Brod, where will be crossing the river again, back to Croatia. Here we will take a break, eat and drink something and maybe even take a refreshing swim, before heading back to the hotel for dinner.

  • Cycling: 3 to 4 hours (around 50km), easy to moderate level

We will take a lunchbreak at the source of the Gacka river, a lovely location where you can find several old wooden mills. We continue by van from there, going to Plitvice National Park, one of Croatia’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage sites.

You will be staying in a private guesthouse, run by a local family. Korana is a small, idyllic village close to National Park Plitvice and the guest houses in Korana are simple, traditional houses in beautiful locations. Korana offers nothing more than private houses in a romantic and idyllic setting. There are no restaurants or shops, making it seem as if the village comes straight out of a fairytale. The story goes that a man named Barac bravely fought against an angry Turkish giant close to the cases. Barac beat the giant and the villagers then decided to name the caves after him. After the cave, we have time for an optional walk through National Park Plitvice, where we can visit some of the small lakes and waterfalls, before heading back to Korana for a traditional Croatian meal.

When you walk over the wooden footpaths and bridges you get to see the wonders of Plitvice and its flora and fauna from up close. The lakes have the most amazing colors that range from turquoise to opal blue and emerald green. The park offers more than 90 waterfalls, both small and large, numerous caves and an abundance of wildlife. Plitvice truly deserves its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

We will enjoy our picnic lunch surrounded by the beauty of the park and on the way back to our starting point we will hop on a panoramic boat and shuttle bus as well. In the afternoon we can take a short bike ride to one of the most beautiful vistas of the park, with an amazing view over the lakes and waterfalls.
