Day 1 Arrival in Split
Dalmatia’s cultural capital is a living museum, filled with remnants of its glorious past just waiting to be discovered. Let our driver pick you up from the airport and drive you to your luxury hotel, one of the many excellent four-star hotels that Split has to offer, where you will be welcomed by friendly and helpful staff.
Once you have taken a rest, you can start exploring this beautiful metropolis and uncovering its fascinating history, that dates all the way back to the fourth century BC. Some of the sights that we recommend are Split’s archaeological museum, which also happens to be the oldest Croatian museum, and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius (Sveti Duje). This cathedral is regarded as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world, from the seventh century AD, and offers stunning views over the city and the Adriatic Sea from its impressive bell tower. Explore one of Split’s many charming neighbourhoods, such as Veli Varos, with its lovely winding streets and cosy restaurants and bars.
Day 2 Split (Day tour to visit filming locations)
Step into the magical world of Game of Thrones and forget everyday life as you immerse yourself into the intrigue and the drama of the greatest fantasy series of all time. Let the unique locations that you are going to visit inspire you and imagine yourself living the life of your favourite character.
Your first experience on this full-day small group tour will be a visit to the Fortress of Klis, located in the mountains behind the city. The fortress is an ancient stronghold that stands proudly on top of an impressive rock formation in an area that used to be at the centre of some of the country’s most legendary battles. Klis was used as a filming location for Daenerys’ stronghold because of its stirring perch and exceptional views. It will not be difficult to feel the power of the mighty Targaryens from this unforgettable site.
The tour continues to Zrnovnica, where an abundance of grain mills used to stand in medieval times. Most of these grain mills have not passed the test of time but a few mills remain and have been lovingly restored for visitors to admire. What makes Zrnovnica so special from a Game of Thrones perspective, is that a few famous scenes were filmed here, including a climactic battle scene from season four and the famous bathing scene of Missandrei, Danaery’s trusted interpreter and handmaid.
The last experience of the day is probably also the most impressive one. Enter the Palace of Diocletian in the heart of Split and be blown away by the imperial glory of this UNESCO world heritage site that is still part of everyday life in the centre of Split. It is understandable that the palace has sparked the imagination of the crew as well as the cast of Game of Thrones. It is here where Daenerys fights against the overlords of Meereen and Yunkai and hardens her resolve to return to Westeros as a conquering queen. One of Rome’s greatest emperors, Diocletian, built the palace as a retirement residence and today it is the most complete remains of a Roman palace in the world. You’ll be sure to feel the blood of the dragon pulsing through your veins at this unique location.
